The What:
The Desert Winds Expedition Race is an unsupported*, 3 to 5 day, 310 mile adventure race of 4-person coed or all female teams in the Mojave Desert outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.


This is a Checkpoint Tracker Series Event...                                                            to get CPT points 

*Unsupported = teams do not need a support team


The Disciplines:
Trekking, Mountain Biking, Paddling, Canyon Descents, Navigation Throughout, and some surprises...!


The Entry Fee:
  • Teams 1 – 20      $2400
  • Teams 21 – 40      $3000
  • Teams 41 – 50       $3600
  • Teams 51 and over         $4000

With the registration price structure increasing with more teams participating, The Desert Winds Expedition Race will also provide an increasing prize structure. The more teams that participate, the larger the prize pool becomes. The prize payout structure is as follows:

  • Saturday at 1200 hour noon, September 25 - Race FINISH, Awards and Party

The Mojave Desert is sometimes called the "desert of mountains". The race course will showcase the beauty and diversity of the Mojave Desert with its flora and fauna and with its stunning desert and mountain vistas. See also our Google Map page.

You'll be trekking across big desert expanses. A longnosed leopard lizard. You'll be traveling through their habitat. Petroglyphs, ancient rock art in the Mojave Desert.These are bristlecone pines. You'll find these above 9000'. Some of these trees are up to 2000 years old! Photo by QT Luong.You'll be mountain biking in the Mojave Desert. It's beautiful and rugged. The desert tortoise, you might see one of these guys. Beavertail cactus in bloom. Always, more desert vistas to cross... The mojave green rattlesnake, which you just might see. This is desert indigo, rare and beautiful.The gila monster, a poisonous lizard that will stand its ground when confronted. A desert storm...The rainbow afterward... The "sea eagle", an osprey in the Black Canyon.The water of the Colorado River in the amazingly arid Mojave Desert. You'll be paddling on the Colorado River. This is a view of the Black Canyon. You'll find bighorn sheep in the mountains of this race course. A blue heron in the Black Canyon. The bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America.Evening begins on Lake Mead...
