Desert Winds Race Concepts
Some of our philosophies, thinking, and solutions on directing an adventure race...

Go here to learn how to prepare for this race.

The Journey:
An expedition adventure race should be about journey, the exploration, and the adventure. It is a team effort but, the reward for finishing is personal and long lasting. We'll provide a race that is about the journey.

Navigation:
If there are discrepancies between the race maps and the reality of the terrain on the course, it will be explained in the coursebook notes.

Maps:
We will provide waterproof and tear resistant race maps.

Coursebook:
The coursebook will be printed on waterproof/tear resistant paper. It will have an easy to read format with a  timeline projection of the race. A clear timeline allows teams to better strategize their race.

Swag
The swag you receive for an expedition race should be the best you've ever seen.

100 meter rule:
The 100 meter rule is generally an important concept for safety. But, it is often a hard rule to enforce in a fair and consistent manner. There are cases where it seems appropriate to us to disregard this 100 meter concept. Here are two examples where the 100 m rule won't be enforced; if a team is spread out to search for a hidden trail in the forest or if a team is "flying" down a fast mtbike downhill.

Cutoffs:
Expedition adventure racing teams should be able to finish their journey. The purpose of a cutoff time is to ensure teams can make it to the finish line. A cutoff time should not prevent or discourage teams from doing so. Therefore, cutoff times will be reasonable. We want every team to see the Finish Line.

Ranking and Unranking:
The traditional thinking is for a team to be ranked it must finish with all its original members. Our thinking is an athlete who gets to the finish line should be ranked.

Parasite racing and ad hoc teams:
Parasite racing is the formation of ad hoc teams, a simple concept that will allow more people to reach the finish line and to reach the finish line ranked. Thus teams who have lost members can form a new team or join another team. These ad hoc teams can have 3 to 7 members. These teams will be ranked behind teams who have finished with their original members.

Jerseys:
We don't particularly like wearing jerseys, so we are not going to ask you to wear them!

Humor:
You can get a sense of that by simply reading our domain name; desertwindsexpeditionrace. We are also known for naming certain checkpoints and portions of certain legs with a little humor, i.e. in the middle of a harsh desert crossing when you are probably "dying" of thirst, the CP might be named "Ice Water." We always try to keep things lighthearted and humorous.
